I Haven’t Written Anything in 30 Days

And I don’t feel guilty at all.

Well not exactly 30 days–more like 29–but it’s definitely been almost a month.  This is not unusual for me.  I frequently take a hiatus after I finish a project–it’s pretty much a ritual.

I have never been one of those writers who believes that I have to write every day. Certainly, I write pretty much every day when I’m working on a project, for at least an hour.  But when I’m not working on a project or I don’t have a deadline, I don’t feel compelled to write just for the sake of saying I have written.

What do I do when I’m not writing without guilt?  I watch a lot of television, read a lot (books, manga, whatever), play video games, and generally just take a breather.  And here’s the truth, I need that time so much.  I need the time to read, because when I’m working on a project, I generally don’t have time for a lot (if any) recreational reading. I need to “veg out” as my mother used to say and not think really hard about anything.

Inevitably, though, the creative juices start to flow again and if I’m not writing, my creative energy starts coming out in all sorts of interesting ways (case in point).

It’s always about at that month mark.  Then, I’m back to walking around with my notepad in my hand or pounding away at the keyboard.  That’s about where I am now.  Itching to start writing once again.
